What you need

Before you can learn to drive you must be at least 17 years of age and be in possession of a valid signed provisional driving licence for the category of vehicle you intend to drive. As an exception, if you are receiving disability living allowance, you can start driving at 16

If you do not hold a provisional licence, you can apply online at DVLA or using form D1 from a Post Office.

If you are wanting to undertake any private practice, you must be accompanied by a driver who has held a full ec/eea licence for at least 3 years for the kind of vehicle you're driving, who still holds that licence and is at least 21 years of age.

You must also be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres(67 feet) in good daylight. For a new style number plate issued after September 2001, the distance is 20 metres(66 feet). If you need to wear glasses(or contact lenses) to do this, you must wear them at all times whilst driving.
